Contrast

Some things become clear when the contrast is turned up. Any photographer knows how to manipulate the contrast in an image to highlight, to shadow, to bring dimensionality to the subject. Under a microscope, discovery is dependent on the contrast between features. Even bioinformatics (mining big data) is dependent on contrasting signal from noise.

Have we all noticed features of our lives that are now more clearly discerned and appreciated due to the contrast between life before and during the COVID-19 pandemic?  What remarkable illumination we are now living in.

Some of the treasures rediscovered in the crisis, we may want to be sure to hold onto after the pandemic has crested, which it surely will.  Let’s plan to share the gems we gratefully and intentionally carry forward.

Arizona’s “can do” culture resonates well with me, and has for over 60 years. The citizens’ accommodating attitudes towards creativity, entrepreneurship, and courageous-yet-respectful explorations foster communities of compassionate growth populated by agents of change. The various ecosystems and landscapes of the Southwest are beautiful and inspiring. Greatly bolstered by the companionship of my bride of over 4 decades and the wonder of my extended family, I live a charmed life. My professional work as a translational cancer scientist brings deep fulfillment as I apply leading edge genomic technology to understand human disease, mentor junior scientists, and engage with interdisciplinary teams. My days are filled with work and wonder.
